Our approx schedule (sixth form college):

Year 1 - September - introduce the course and as part of this the NEA (so they know what is coming) - they have a flick through a couple of project from students from the last year and watch a couple of testing videos
Year 1 - Feb - they read through a selection of analysis sections and mark a couple in pairs (and we then feedback what a moderator would say). They then are asked to complete a couple of project proposals.
Year 1 - Mar - we meet with student and decide on the project idea and they start completing their draft analysis
Year 1 - Easter holiday - they hand in draft analysis and we prepare general feedback for the students
Year 1 - Summer term - we meet and set them ideas as to tutorials to follow / APIs to research (etc - skills they need for their project).
Year 1 - after end of year exams - lesson time dedicated to them working on NEA (to hopefully get them enthused to work over the summer  break)

Year 2 - all lessons to first half-term - NEA time
Year 2 - November - 36 hour coding session
Year 2 - Dec - hand in coding / design
Year 2 - by Feb - project handed in
Year 2 - viva with each student (as we finish project log for marking)
